I havent been able to download pictures in a while. As I make these entries, they arent in the right order for all the trips this summer.

Saint Louis !!!!
Ronda and I went to Saint Louis to visit Trix, Joe, Scooter and Gulliver. We had an awesome time there. We visited the Arch, Budweiser Brewery and the St Louis Zoo. Even managed to get to watch the St Louis Cardinals play baseball !

Fripp Island !
What an awesome trip this year with all the family and Im very late posting here about it but trying to get all caught up.
We went to Fripp Island for the annual get together. Had a great house down on the end of the Island. I also took all the kids out on a Charter boat and we did some deep sea fishing.
To me.....the highlight of the trip was to the Sheldon Ruins about 15 miles outside Beaufort. Its an old church built in the 1700's. It was burned down by the british, rebuilt, and burned again by Gen Sherman during the Civil War.
These are just a couple of pictures of the Deer that would come up to the deck in the morning . If you feed the apples, they come back daily.
you know I have to include some pictures of the Dogs !!!

Womans Day Magazine
I read this book once about Leadership and after finishing it Im convinced that there really is an art to Leadership that many will never be able to accomplish.
In the Military, we define the art of Leadership as being able to convince someone to willingly do something that they wouldnt normally want or even think of doing. ( Combat Leadership)
Now, I say all of that to say this.
On the news yesterday they reported on somehting that Obama is currently saying in his Iowa speeches and something that he hit really hard on during his weekly radio address.
Without having the actual quote in front of me I can only paraphrase.
Obama - I need you ( the voters) to put pressure on your elected officials (Congress) so that they will start to create more jobs and make the economy bounce back.
When I first heard him say it I just sort of took it at face value and didnt think too much about it. But the more I thought about it, and once my wife pointed out something to me Im convinced that this guy, as a Leader, couldnt lead a pack of drunks to the liquor store.
As the President, he is supposed to lead our congressional leaders and the nation. But he hasnt mastered the art of Leadership or else he would have never had to make that statement. Why would he turn to me and tell me to do something that he should have already been doing.
Now, the reason for this entry was something my wife found on the last page of the Spring 2009 Womans Day magazine.
One the backpage they print in each publication an inspirational quote form someone in a position of importance. Im still not sure why but one quote was from Mariah Carey who really coulndt inspire me to do anything more than change the radio station but thats a whole different subject.
In this paticular article was an ispirational quote from Obama that he made in 2009.
I promise Im not making this up and have included a photo from my cell phone to prove it.
Quote - Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time. We are the ones weve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.
I think Obama needs to reread the first line of that and practice what he preached.

2 months since my last entry
Well its been 2 months since I put anything in here and its time to give an up date.
Back in March, I signed up for a class at the Botanical gardens here in Charlotte. The class was on organic gardening. Truly organic means that the garden will have no soil...only compost and no chemicals such as fertilizer or pesticide. A garden like this requires a raised bed.
Soooooooo, I did it. Once I came home and the weather reached a point where there was no threat of freezing or frost, I went to work.
As a kid growing up, we lived on a piece of land where we turned an entire pasture into a garden. While I dont remember the deminsions, i do remember my father saying once that there were 64 rows and each was about 1200 feet long. That garden was all consuming in that it required constant care and picking, Every member of our extended family that wanted fresh veggies was able to get them. We even sold some produce although I dont remember if it was a lucrative business.
My garden is not that big. In fact, for as much work as Ive put into it, I have to laugh when I think about the size comparison.
I built the bed 10 feet long, 4 feet wide 28 inches deep. It may not seem that deep but it took two truckloads of compost to fill it up.
On the back row nearest the fence I planted green beans which are currently producing enough to provide a meal for two every three or four days. I have 3 rows of Brussel sprouts which have turned out to be huge plants and once ready to harvest will provide enough to feed three or four families. The ironic thing about it is that I hate brussel sprouts but the rest of my family loves them.
I planted two rows of lettuce and carrots. The carrots are growing big and the lettuce is awesome. Its a leafy lettuce sort of like romain. Its amazing to me how strong, green and leafy fresh lettuce tastes compared to what you buy in the store.
No garden is complete without peppers of some sort. I have hot peppers, sweet peppers and bell peppers. They have all been slow to mature but as of this morning I have blooms on all the plants.
Next are the tomatoes. I put in one of the Big Boy variety and two Cherry tomatoe plants. Of all the plants these are producing at a rate that doesnt seem natural . On the Cherry plant I have ( at last count) almost 51 tomatoes that are currently in various stages of ripening. The Big Boys have about a dozen that should be ready in a few more days. The plants are almost 5 feet tall as I type this.
On a whim, and to fill in an empty spot, I dropped a couple seeds for a sunflower plant. Brandon and I took a tape measure a few days ago to get a measurement and it is now over 9 feet tall.
In all, if I were to pick everything at once, Id have enough to make a serving of beans and sprouts, and enough for one or two side salads. Its not really alot but it has sure been alot of fun getting it to this point.
Im already planning on dropping in a few more beds for next year.
